NBC, ABC, FOX and the WB Set Initial 2005-06 Season Orders
By The Futon Critic Staff

LOS ANGELES (thefutoncritic.com) -- NBC, ABC, FOX and the WB have leaked their initial 2005-06 season orders as well as nearly all their renewals and cancellations of existing series.

The news comes with barely 12 hours until NBC presents its fall 2005 schedule to the advertising community, a presentation which for all intents and purposes remains a complete mystery. Nearly a half-dozen variations on NBC's schedule have floated around this weekend with everything from "The West Wing" moving to Sundays to "Joey" moving to Tuesdays. Nevertheless with executives and producers heading to New York City over the weekend, the series that did and didn't make the cut have become pretty clear.

Among the surprise renewals - FOX's "The Bernie Mac Show," ABC's "Jake in Progress" and "Less Than Perfect" - three shows widely considered longshots to return. Conversely, ABC has pulled the plug on "My Wife and Kids" and "Eight Simple Rules," two series thought to have brighter prospects than "Jake" and "Perfect."

--------------------------------------------------------------

this is last week's news:

Wanda from EOnline reports:

"You Don't Know Jack, and That's a Crying Shame: It's the best show people stupidly ignored this season, which is why it breaks my heart to tell you it looks like Jack & Bobby may be a goner.

When I called J&B boss Greg Berlanti hoping for good news, he told me, "You're so sweet to be holding vigil. It's like day 14 of Terry Schiavo, and you're not giving up. No decision has been made yet, and we haven't been told. But as the clock ticks, I can tell you, it doesn't look good. The network has been so supportive. I think everyone's sort of scratching their heads as to why it's not doing better than it's doing, and everyone loves it and acknowledges that the acting is superb, and there are great stories, but it may very well be our fate to join the ranks of My So-Called Life and Freaks and Geeks."

That damn show. So good, it makes me cry nearly every week. And I swear I was all choked up by the end of Berlanti's call. (Yes, I'm that much of a sap and a fan.)

Still, please keep in mind that nothing is official yet. We'll get the final word on all the shows starting Monday in New York City, when the networks unveil their fall schedules. I will be in NYC every day this week on E! News at 7 p.m., bringing you the breaking news and, quite possibly, offering to have Peter Liguori's baby.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

this is two weeks ago, someone posted it on a tv forum over at journalnews:

Jack and Bobby will not be renewed. When I found out, I was in shock but I suppose not that much shock as it was expected. Working in the industry has its kicks, but this sure puts a backseat to the latter.

As sad as it to say, it is far more sad for the fans, who will have to find something else to watch Wednesday nights. (Perhaps a new Berlanti show? *wink, wink*)

A source very close to production has informed us that The WB isn't feeling so hot these days, that the 10-yr old network is going through "hit-withdrawal." Basically, in the tv-business this means that if a network stagnates in making a "hit- show" in a minimum of three years, they lose advertisers. Which means losing money. Which also means that a low-rated show, no matter how much loved by the critics, has gotta' be canned.

All recent shows that were targeted by The WB to be their "hit" shows, failed. (Examples include such recent failures such as Tarzan, Birds of Prey, and The Mountain.) And now Jack and Bobby.

And, as Jack and Bobby was The WB's targeted "hit-show" that bombed during the 2004-2005 season, advertisers aren't happy. Which means next week at the up fronts, The WB best do some butt-kissing if they want to gain advertisers to promote their new shows next season.

The WB hasn't had a hit since Smallville premiered - unless you count Everwood.

The WB, on the drama side, only has a few potential "hits" it will unveil next week at the upfronts in NYC. I am not allowed to say which pilot(s) is/are getting picked up, but I do know that Smallville (which has also suffered a ratings decline this season) will be revamped in a major way next season (and I'm not talking about time-slot change.) However, I *do* know which show is being targeted for the Wednesday 9PM time slot come next season.

That is why The WB isn't taking any chances picking up pilots early, as it did last year with Jack and Bobby, and in recent years, Everwood. Good buzz for a show doesn't always promise strong ratings, as in Jack and Bobby's case this year. And same goes for why The WB is keeping mum about any buzz-worthy pilot(s) they have in store. Call it a case of superstition, I call it clever thinking. (Supernatural, anyone?)

AGAIN, this may change, as reports last season were scrambling (on other networks) whether or not Lost (on ABC) would get placed on midseason or not, and then one week later ABC announced at the up fronts that it would schedule it for the Fall. I am saying that what I am reporting here MAY change, as if you remember a couple of years ago, The WB's comedy Off Centre was cancelled and not announced at the up fronts as a returning series, and then literally days later The WB renewed the show again and production started once more (only to be cancelled again months later.)

Basically, Jack and Bobby is loved by Janollari (president of entertainment of The WB for you newbies out there,) but marketing advisors have been pushing him for months NOT to renew the show, as its lackluster ratings, (come on, Kevin Hill on UPN, WB'S rival, does BETTER in the ratings!) do poorly to retain an audience from Smallville as well.

Jack and Bobby filmed the season finale last month, and as it is a Greg Berlanti show (the guy who made Everwood) he has a great relationship with The WB, even a new pilot that may or may not be picked up for next season - *wink, wink*.

Regardless, production has closed and space on the lot is being vacated for new shows, new sets, etc. as there will be no new episodes filmed in the summer. The cast has been informed but is keeping mum about whether or not Jack and Bobby is canceled. I am here to tell you that sadly, yes - as it stands now - it is.

On another note that other show Charmed, unfortunately, IS getting renewed yet I'm not at liberty to say whether or not The WB will make an announcement next week stating that next season, the 8th season of the skein, will be its last... Tune in to the up fronts next week to see!

Hmm... perhaps Berlanti and Taylor should scrambling to make a DVD set of season one before the actor's contracts expire on July 1st?
-------------

CAN ANYONE CONFIRM, DENY THIS? Is it really cancelled? I know we will have to wait until tomorrow to find out, but does anyone have ANY news?

Edited to add source link.

My first guess would be a lot. I like Smallville but Charmed is past it's time IMO. How many times can someone watch Pheobe in tight little outfits........ hmm... Dawson's Creek turned into the Joey show and Charmed has become the Pheobe show.

While, this is not offical. I think it is safe to say that the show will not be coming back.

This is truly a sad day. First, the lawki board is pronounced closed, and now J&B is cancelled. What's next?

I blame ratings. It always comes down to numbers. Which is why I don't like math.
