Roswell Discussion - Because we all have thoughts and opinions on S3

Hey I decided to start this thread as Lee finally watched S3, and now I want to discuss it, but not in the Gazer thread. Here's Lee's opinions -

Safe to return? Heh. (looks sheepish)

No you read me correct. They didn't bother me at all. Everything was built up for me to hate Jesse. And granted, I should've hated him. He's the older guy. He's not right for Isabel. He's just simply not our beloved Alex. But I didn't hate the guy. Truth be told, he didn't appeal to me, really. Therefore I couldn't find it in myself to get attached to their relationship like I did Gazer. I didn't hate them. I didn't like them. And I definately didn't loathe them. I feel that I am somewhere in the middle. Like floating and just taking in what was acted out in front of me.

I wouldn't say I found their relationship "empty" -- there was obviously something there for Isabel to be attracted to, and eventually, be in love with. But I will say that it was all based on a lie.

One thing that didn't appeal to me, like many of you, was how "easy" they made it for 'Alex' to push Isabel toward Jesse. While I was so overjoyed to see his adorable face, he returns what, third episode in, and all of a sudden he's made his peace? With both his murder and Isabel with a new love interest? I didn't believe that for one minute. Lazy writing on the writers' part. I don't care if he's a ghost. A figment of Isabel's imagination -- that second voice within her head -- it's still lazy.

As an Isabel fan first and foremost, I tend to believe if she's happy with what she's got, what she's trying to achieve then I will tolerate. Even if the voice at the back of my head knows what she's doing won't really work out. And, ultimately, as we all observed, it didn't.

As you guys have discussed a little bit of above, yes, I did find they pushed Isabel down to something of a fourth pecking order in terms of screentime and storyline. I know Roswell was started for the whole Liz/Max soul mates relationship but they did kind of tend to take over the whole thing, didn't they? See this is why I prefer to watch Grey's Anatomy. As I'm sure we all know, Katie has more or less publically stressed how much she adores working on GA and that she didn't seem to like working on Roswell all that much. Maybe this was a reason -- they were making a sham of her character, and she probably didn't like it. Much like how Sarah Michelle Gellar was never ever truely happy with Buffy setting up with Spike. But hey, that's all irrelevant to Roswell.

Overall, Roswell season 3 was not as bad as everyone made it out to be. It's definately, without question -- by far -- the weakest season of the three. The writers were just becoming far too lazy with their storylines, going to the outright ridiculous. I mean for example, the Evanses all of a sudden suspecting that their kids might not be who they say they are. Yes, they touched on that a little in season one with Diane in The Toy House, but for me, I felt like that came out of nowhere. Just like Isabel and Jeese -- they were thrown at us in the premiere, and we're what, supposed to buy that? Yeah, right.

Other more general musings about this season..

- What did they do to Maria? What happened to our girl Ms DeLuca from season 1 and 2? Something was just 'off' about her.

- Max's hair was driving me to distraction in the early episodes, really pleased he cut it nice and short, giving those big ears a public flexing *g*

- Don't start me on Liz Parker, she annoyed the hell out of me even more so in this season.

- Liz's father, Jeff, pissed me off to the Nth degree as well.

- As I mentioned a bit earlier - Philip and Diane Evans. I felt the writers gave them a brain transplant.

- Isabel's hair. Not a lover of it, but I must admit it did start to grow on me mid-season. Of course, Katie suits blonde ten times better.

- Valenti and his band? I loved that.

- Dreamer scenes made me want to spew up my insides. Yawn. I don't see their appeal at all.

- Not enough Kyle.

- Not enough Isabel.

- Michael's hair -- wtf? (I love mentioning the hair in this don't I? )

- Tess go away. Just go back to Antar out of my sight. Or a deserted island preferably. Oh wait, you did.

- What is it with Max and children at Christmas time?

- Why didn't Isabel knock Tess into the land of unconciousness when she came face to face with her for the first time after Alex's death? I would have vaporised the little bitch.

- Joe Pantoliano cameos in Control and Secrets and Lies? Work of genius. The guy is a true legend. Love him.

- Kivar...? Hello hotness! Wow, he was quite something.

- Edge of the Ocean by Ivy playing at Isabel's wedding - in a Katie scene in Grey's too. Coincidence? Yep, sure. And the name 'Isabel' does not follow Katie about. *g* Listening to the song right now, I love it, regardless of the 'scene' it was played in.

Okay, so this post was long and not so Gazer-ish. I could have made a new thread purely for Roswell discussion. But since a few of you wanted to know my thoughts, I just thought why not post it in here anyway -- could always possibly move it there in future if such said thread is created/found.

Soooooo... discuss my ramblings if you wish. Flame me too if you want -- all of the above is truely what I found while watching this season. But hey, I liked seasons 3 and 4 of Alias while most of the fandom did not. Go figure.
Let's get discussing!

Okay, so i agree with Lee on some points of Roswell, not so much on others...

Like, Isabel and Jesse did bother me, but more in the sense that it didn't feel right... It felt forced and weird, and I didn't like that. If it had been more natural (like a slow progressive thing over 50 seasons) then I may have come to accept it... But it was done way too fast.

We never saw them met, one minute they were being "introduced" and vaguly remembering each other, the next they're making out. Too weird.

Maria - Totally agree with you hon. Maria was this total independent woman in S1, teflon babe, able to handle anything. By S3 she was whiny, dependant, indescive... It wasn't Maria. It was wrong. I did like the way they tried to pursue her music in S3, because music was Maria, we started learning that in S1, and the way she would compromise her music for fame. That was very Maria-ish.

But the essence of Maria was gone. She didn't babble anymore. I enjoyed the Billy storyline, only because it was something new for her, but at the same time, I was screaming "You're with Michael! Remember him? Your space-boy alien who you love!!"

The Parents - That was another storyline that felt forced. Like you Lee, I found it happened way too quickly, they didn't build up to it, or build it in earlier. Suddenly they just suspected there was something that was completely wrong and they were hellbent on finding out what it was, instead of respecting their son's privacy. Same with Geoff Parker.

Dreamer - Now, amazingly, I actually liked some of the Dreamer storyline... Not the whole Dreamer kissing, and making out and all that... But the whole Liz getting sent to boarding school, and Max dying. That was fun!

Of course, inevitably, they get back together and it becomes a snore fest again.

Michael - The hair was weird, but I got used to it pretty quickly. I liked Michael's storyline, the was he got a job, and got friends outside of the alien mafia... It was good to see something like this, because in seasons before hand, the only people who weren't in support of the group (or parents of the group) were after them. They didn't many friends outside of the group, and you never really saw them.

And as for Michael, outside of Isabel and Max originally, and then Maria, semi Liz and Alex, he had no friends. So to see him laughing and enjoying himself was really good, and I liked that. I also loved how Locke was his boss!

Valenti and the Kit Shickers - Loved it. I never got to see the song that Jim and Maria sung together until I got the DVD, because that ep was taped for me, coz I was working, and my parents missed the first 5 minutes. But I really enjoyed it. And all the other songs that Valenti sung. I liked that he too had a storyline, and was making friends outside of the group. It really was a season for change, wasn't it?

Back later with more thoughts.

No shooting means I can still tar and feather you, right Lee?

Fine, I'll play nice. Oh, and I agree with you on Alias S3 and S4. And Alias is back tonight!!!

The Interloper (Jesse)

He came out of nowhere, and it was really forced.

Alex would never urge Isabel to rush into something; as a ghost it's impossible, and Isabel knew him too well to hallucinate him saying that so even as a figment of her imagination this stretches plausibility much too far.

I also found the age difference to be a factor. He was working with her father; she was still high-school aged, even if she did graduate early. It bothers me considerably.

Moreover, he was always boring. He couldn't even be a love-to-hate figure. The character was lacking in all personality.

Isabel

I wanted to see her story.

How she dealt with the Vilandra stuff; we got one ep (Isabel's only real ep of the season, "Interruptus"). I agree with Cici that Kivar was cool - there was the potential for so much more to happen there. Besides, I was rooting for Kivar the whole ep.

Okay, so she's going off to college; how is that working out?

Even the return of Tess was somehow made all about Liz. "Out of my way! She only mind raped and murdered your boyfriend, she kissed mine!"

She was also left out of the more general SF plots, all too often. Rather ironic after the lengths Max went to, to make sure Isabel stayed in Roswell.

I was hugely disappointed in how underplayed the storyline of her telling her parents was. It was as much or more about Max, and in any case played down. This is a storyline that began in S1... it deserved so much more in resolution.

Ultimately, Isabel never reclaimed her dreams. She never stood up to her brother (except when possessed, although that part was fun). She never went and told her parents the truth voluntarily. She never searched for the Granolith or some other way of saving Alex. She never killed Tess. She never even went off to school like she wanted to.

She was self-deceptive and self-destructive. That's more than understandable after the trauma of S2; she suffered far, far more than Max, vastly more than anyone but Alex. But that it made some sense didn't make it easier to watch. I missed the strong, confident Isabel, whose decisions made sense, who was close to her parents, who let Alex in (carefully), who seemed to develop a friendship with Maria.

Maria

Nothing to add. I agree with Lee and Tahra. I was quite disappointed; she may be my favorite non-Gazer character, in the first two seasons.

C'mon this is Miss Popular Music, "play what the judges like, Alex!" and she won't follow her own advice for a chance to become rich and famous? This was completely out of nowhere.

Michael

Maybe the least damaged of the characters in S3. Still not quite his old self, but closer than anyone else.

Dreamer

I agree more with Lee than with Tahra on this. They bugged me. Never my favorite, but I didn't even like them in S3.

I also found Max's return from the dead horribly unfair. Yeah, bring him back. In turn!

Okay, what I meant when I said I liked the Dreamer storyline - I liked the fact that Max died and Liz got sent away to boarding school.

As I said, the rest of it, the kissing and that was a snore fest.... Once they got back together, I could have shot myself. It was more fun when they were both suffering... Because I love to watch them suffer!

Khivar - Loved him, loved him, loved him. Agree... There was completely room for his character to develop and for Isabel's to develop with him. He was completely well played.

And I completely agree about the whole Tess thing being made out to be more about Max and Liz than Isabel. She suffered more at the hands of Tess than Liz did... Altho, to give Liz her due, she did lose a friend. On the other hand, she treated said friend pretty badly the majority of the time anyways.

I just think it was completely unfair that Isabel didn't get as much as the other's did in the way of storylines... Or her storyline could have been made better.

About the Christmas ep? What's with Max and trying to save the kids? The first time he did it, that was sweet and nice of him. The second time was just completely blah. I never watch Samual Rising because it's one of the most boring eps. It's all about Max saying 'Look at how great and wonderful I am trying to help this family at Christmas'. Even Michael does more than him at Christmas time.

I have to say tho, I enjoyed Tale of Two Parties. The Kyle/Isabel interaction was fun... Especially Bhuddah Boy's dreams about Isabel, so cute. And the Max/Maria storyline was fun as well... I like those two as friends, which we never get to see. Max seems a lot better when he's around Maria... Whereas when him and Liz are around each other it's a complete bore. But yes, I did enjoy Tale of Two Parties.
